Laura Herald's Cocktail Favorites by Laura Herald
Expertly ordering up a delicious cocktail can easily impress a date or a colleague, but if you find an original offering at a favorite bar, it won’t fail to impress you every time. Try one of these unique creations next time you are out, and finding that special go-to cocktail may be easier than you thought.
The Lychee Martini (Saint, 90 Exeter St.) This luscious martini is a product of the mystifying lychee, a rare sub tropical fruit originating in South China. Others will be boggled by the appearance of a raw scallop in your drink, but you won’t be fooled by its white, translucent glossiness. “That’s a peeled lychee,” you’ll tell them, “It’s culturally famed as "the King of Fruits" in South China as well as high in the antioxidant Vitamin C and the essential mineral Potassium.” Once the skin is peeled off, the crisp juicy flesh of a lychee fruit has the consistency of a grape, but the taste is sweeter. Lychees have a sub acid sweet taste and have a wonderful freshness to them that is hard to describe, as does this cocktail. Made with fresh lychee juice, top shelf vodka, and whole lychee fruit, The Lychee Martini is sweetly refreshing. Order this drink at Saint, and you’ll get an original cocktail and conversation starter in one.
The Ginger Cosmo (Excelsior, 272 Boylston St.) In the mood for spicy delight? Head to Excelsior and order up a Ginger Cosmo. Unlike some similar drinks made with Ginger syrup, Excelsior infuses their Vodka with fresh ginger, and the outcome is penetrating and aromatic. Take a bite of that candied ginger on the rim of the glass and its guaranteed to bite you back. This hot n’ spicy cocktail is concocted with Ginger Infused Vodka, Cointreau, Lime, and a Splash of Cranberry, then garnished with Candied Ginger. Ask for the robust Ginger Cosmo at Excelsior if you can take the heat.
The White Crantini (Vox Populi, 755 Boylston St.) An alternative twist on the traditional Cosmo, this martini is perfect for those who wish to be seen sipping clear than with a pink drink. It’s not all about looks however, the white cranberry is milder and smoother than the red cranberry, letting the vodka itself dominate this cocktail. White cranberries are harvested before they develop their familiar red color and full-bodied taste, making this drink more refreshing and less tart than a regular Cosmo. The fresh lime and cranberries are sweet but not sugary, and the uncompromised quality of the vodka is apparent from the first taste. The White Crantini is made with Finlandia Lime & Cranberry Vodkas, Triple Sec, fresh lime and white cranberry juices, garnished with fresh cranberries. Hit up Vox for this improvement on a classic cocktail.
The 33 Old Fashioned (33 Restaurant & Lounge, 33 Stanhope St.) It doesn’t get any more classic than an Old Fashioned cocktail, originally created as a bourbon cocktail in the 1880s at gentlemen’s club in Louisville, Kentucky. Bourban is traditionally sweeter than a rye whisky and melds beautifully with the fruity orange and cherry flavors. True to the original recipe, 33 uses Jim Beam Black Kentucky Bourbon to create their signature 33 Old Fashioned, infused in-house with dried figs and blanched almonds for a flavor upgrade. 33 whips up this traditional cocktail with infused bourban, bitters, soda and sugar, then garnishes with blood oranges and maraschino cherries. Tough and honest with a sweet side, The 33 Old Fashioned is something to hold on to.
