Boston Social Outcomes: The Debut of the Saks Fifth Avenue Renovation
While I’ve attended my fair share of social galas and charity events, it had been over ten years since I actually covered one. First, it’s a lot more “physical” that many realize; you’re walking around, meeting people, shooting photos, and getting to know “who’s who.” And then, of course, Boston’s social scene is ably covered by the likes of The Improper Bostonian’s Jonathan Soroff (also known as the “King of Surveillance” of Boston’s social scene) … and lest we forget, “The Maven of All Things Society and Gardening in Boston,” Hilda Morrill of the Boston Post-Gazette, the Milton Times, and bostonevents.com. But last week I “came of out ‘retirement’,” because of the event I attended last week On September 25, Saks Fifth Avenue in Boston unveiled the fruits of a renovation which has taken over 2 1/2 years. In true Saks “form,” the debut was the epitome of style and class. And also in true Saks form, the debut demonstrated the store’s commitment to the local community and its charities. The lavish renovation gala was held by Saks to benefit the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. For over 130 years the MSPCC has advanced the interests of children with its proactive efforts in not only the protection of our kids, but also prevention through its public advocacy, family support, and adoption services – to name only a few examples supporting the MSPCC’s mission. Attending the MSPCC benefit – and soaking in the Saks renovation – were the omnipresent Dick Concannon and Smoki Bacon of “The Literati Scene” … boldfacers.com’s Lisa Pierpont … Doris Yaffe … and financial kingpin Richard DeAgazio (who, anecdotally, was the best Protocol representative at the 1984 Olympics). Boston’s network affiliates were well-represented. WCVB journalists Susan Wornick and Mary Richardson from “Chronicle” were there supporting the MSPCC, as well as marquee anchor Frances Rivera from WHDH / WLVI (photo below), who never ceases to evince to everyone her amazing sense of style and fashion. Of course, the big star was the Saks renovation itself. Shoppers arriving by the Ring Road entrance will get the biggest greeting of all: a two-story glass façade. And as patrons amble between all the designer boutiques on both floors, the escalator ride will allow people to admire the Swarovski crystallized wall mural (photo below), adorned with over one million crystals.
