Our nation's capitol is in a bit of turmoil at the moment — but that's not to say there's nowhere quiet and romantic in Washington DC

Jefferson Ext 180.jpg (45506 bytes)I planned my trip to the capitol city months before and did some research on the net to find what I thought would be a cozy and romantic place for a getaway. Well, I found it at The Jefferson Hotel. Located just about four blocks from the White House on Sixteenth and M Streets, The Jefferson allows you to be in the middle of all the action without feeling like you are in a big city hotel.

It's across the street from the headquarters of the National Geographic Society and The University Club. Two blocks away is the shopping area of Connecticut Avenue, with stores such as Brooks Brothers and Burberry's.

The very elegant exterior makes you question if you are walking into a hotel at all. It is small and quaint, yet has all the qualities of larger property ...   without making you feel like a number. I must say that the staff at The Jefferson made my guest and I feel like we were the only ones staying there.

It just so happened that I got engaged that weekend, and our concierge John made sure we felt special. Upon our arrival back to our suite from site seeing a tray, "compliments of the staff" came to our door. Champagne and a fruit tray were sent with warm regards.

Jefferson Bedroom.jpg (38433 bytes)The 100 rooms of The Jefferson are all individually decorated with antiques and historic memorabilia. Each has a European tone and decor. The suites are very spacious and offer a large living area complete with a phone with two lines, fax, TV/VCR and stereo. The bedroom features a king size bed (turned down for you at night of course) with a television at the foot for late night viewing. The bathroom was immaculate with plenty of fresh fluffy towels and to die for plush robes.

Room rates at The Jefferson range from $250 to $1200 a night, but off season rates are discounted. If I had to nit pick (which I do) I would suggest that some more attention to detail be paid in the rooms. I did notice some stains and wear and tear on the upholstery that you don’t expect from a hotel of this caliber.

Downstairs in the lounge you can order up a drink, or join friends for traditional afternoon tea fireside. The restaurant at The Jefferson is small but exquisite. The multi-cultural staff was anxious to show me around and brag about the place, even though it was just before dinner hours! The restaurant by the way has been featured in Gourmet Magazine and with good reason. The small but varied menu offers diners an elegant meal of Natural American Cuisine.

Jefferson Suite.jpg (44064 bytes)All in all however, The Jefferson was all I expected it to be. The concierge is extremely helpful and aware of the guests needs. And, you can always count on them to greet you by name when you come through the door.

So if you’ve had it with the Hyatts and Marriotts of the traveling world, try The Jefferson next time you’re in DC.
