The Palm The Westin Copley Place Over the past few years, steakhouses have sprung up in Boston at an amazing rate. And although I only recently visited this Restaurant Pick, The Palm has been in Boston for ten years. After reading my comments, you’ll realize that I will plan “to make up for lost time.” Boston’s “iteration” of The Palm (there are 32 across
the country) is interesting; its décor deviates from what you’d expect from
a steakhouse. Although there’s the typical dark wood panels and booths, the
walls take on a local flavor. Above the tables and booths you’ll find
caricatures of local celebs and politicians. I have to admit that, while
“cute”, these caricatures gave me a false “expectation” of the food to come.
Because I found the food at the Palm wonderful. So … given its similarities to the thousands of steakhouses, how did The Palm become a Superlative Pick? I love filet mignon; the bigger, the better. And at The Palm, I found for the first time in my life a 16-ounce filet (that’s one pound)! And despite its four-inch thickness, there was not an ounce of fat. Plus, it was cooked perfectly which is difficult, especially for thick cuts of beef. My dinner guest ordered a side dish of mushrooms; these “ ‘shrooms” were larger than most, at 2 inches in diameter. The wine list had some good names; however, like most restaurants; a bit overpriced. Vintages of note were a 1994 Leoville Las Cases and a 1995 Château Talbot. But the steak – and the preparation – are why The Palm is a Superlative Pick this week. And as I said, I’ll have to visit more often, to make up for ten years of lost time!
