Nike+iPod Sport Kit

Two of my great loves – my running shoes and my iPod Nano- will finally talk to one another. It’s about time as they have admired each other from afar for some time now!

Nike has teamed up with Apple to create Nike+, a line of products designed around the iPod Nano to bring you a workout that will rock your socks off. If you already run with your Nano, it’s time to take it to the next level and pick up the Nike+iPod Sport Kit. The kit comes with a receiver that plugs into your iPod dock connector and a transmitter that fits into the sole of any Nike+ running shoe. Kudos to Nike on marketing a product that only fits in their shoes. I would protest, except for the fact that Nike makes a great running shoe, and I’ve been buying their shoes for years anyway.

How it works: As soon as you hit the pavement, the sensitive accelerometer in your shoe tracks your progress with every step that you take. It wirelessly transmits this data to the receiver in the Nano. While you run, you get workout-based voice feedback on your progress right through your earbuds, as well as Nike Sport Music content that stays in tune with every step. When you get home, just plug your Nano back into its charging dock to download your stats from the run. This genius little device will only set you back $29.

That’s a fraction of what you’d pay for a personal trainer- you might as well splurge for a new pair of shoes too. Try the Air Zoom Moire+ for men or women. $100.

Keep in mind that the Sport Kit will work only with the iPod Nano; it's incompatible with other iPod models, including its new "big brother," the iPod Video (5G), as well as the brand-new iPod U2, released last week. And again, you'll need a pair of the new Nike+ shoes. The complete line, coming out in July and August, range from $85 to $110.
