Superlative Picks: July 31, 2006 Columnists
Hilda Morrill
www.bostongardens.com It’s been almost 10 years since I first was graced by having Hilda Morrill as a journalistic colleague. Although I was a regular columnist for The Improper Bostonian at the time, I had taken my first steps into writing for “Boston Inner Circle” on AOL, where Hilda was already a columnist read by tens of thousands of AOL subscribers.. In the years that followed, Hilda and I became friends. Naming Hilda Morrill as a Superlative Pick is a no-brainer – even if we weren’t friends. And the reason is quite simple. The columns that Hilda Morrill authors are “must-reads” every week … and as soon as they’re available to the public. Hilda shares her unbounded and unqualified knowledge of flora on her site, bostongardens.com. Each week you’ll find a new column containing tips, advice, and techniques which Hilda has found worthy of promulgation to green-thumbed Bostonians. She also has what appears to be a column / “blog”, called “Season Chores and Observations.” on daily care and maintenance of her own impeccable and varied collection of common and exotic flowers and plants at home, worthy of comparison to the Jardin Exotique in Monaco. Although I do read bostongardens.com, I will admit that I do not have a green thumb; plants die in my presence. In fact, if flowers and plants were “the firstborn of Egypt,” they’d rather be around Moses than me. In addition to gardening, Hilda is recognized as one of the major authorities on Boston’s social scene. Each week I await anxiously for a new Hilda Morrill column on society. In print, you will find Hilda’s journalistic handiwork each week in The Boston Post Gazette as well as The Milton Times. And on the web, you’ll find her at bostonevents.com. Why does Hilda stand out in this area? Each week in her column, she presents a refreshingly varied sample of the events in Boston. And unlike most of her contemporaries, she uses much of her space to talk about the event and its beneficiary, the worthy cause of the event, and not as much on the local celebs (such as they are in Boston) in attendance. Plus, she shares news on upcoming galas, as well as news from restaurants, book signings, and musical performances; basically everything you’d want a “heads-up” on. Hilda’s breadth of knowledge and connections, combined with her inscrutably perfect selection of news and information, make for columns which are “can’t miss.” It’s actually quite simple to explain why her columns and articles are “de rigueur”: because Hilda Morrill has taste. To me, any event which Hilda attends is, by definition, one which I have to attend as well. And more often than not, I find myself actually checking out the places which Hilda talks about. Recently, Hilda told me that, when I first contacted in 1997 our Boston Inner Circle editor, she was right there. And she tried to warn our editor that I might be crazy or weird and not to get mixed up with me. That story alone should prove that Hilda Morrill has taste.
