Restaurants

The Federalist

15 Beacon Street
Boston
617-670-2515

In my dining experience around the United States, I've found most restaurant wine lists — even in some of the most famous American eateries — to be sorely lacking in truly first-class wine selections. Two exceptions to this regrettable rule come to mind: Le Cirque 2000 in New York, and L'Orangerie in Los Angeles. Certainly, no restaurant near Boston came close.

The Federalist changes all that; their wine selections surpass even Le Cirque 2000 and L'Orangerie. While you'll pay the price (literally), at least "The Fed" offers you the chance to enjoy a "fantasy wine" with your "fantasy dinner". White Burgundy? Try the 1990 Corton-Charlemagne Leroy ($700). A Pauillac? The Fed can serve you the 1949 Mouton-Rothschild ($4,500). Prefer a Pomerol? The Fed offers seventeen vintages of Château Petrus, starting at the 1974 ($1,400) to the 1924 ($10,000). And for $12,000 The Fed can even offer one of the rare bottles of the 1907 Heidsieck Monopole champagne, which was recently recovered from a shipwreck off the coast of Japan.

Dining choices are also first-class. Appetizers include full caviar service ($60-$110 depending on grain size), and three Glidden Point Oyster Shooters ($14). Entrée choices include a Baked Beef Wellington ($38) and a 2-pound "Lobster Clam Bake" ($40).
