Review: Hydrotherapy Services at Emerge
Quickly walking down Newbury St. – slowed only by the hustle and bustle of on-coming pedestrians – my mind raced with a million thoughts. I had deadlines to meet, people to call, places to be, and things to accomplish. Dogs were barking, horns were honking, and people were yelling, but then I reached my destination. Things slowed down when I entered Boston’s newest day spa, Emerge …way down. “The ultimate urban resort destination spa,” Emerge has been designed to relax, soothe, and recharge the body and the mind. All the services at Emerge aim to meet the personal needs of their patrons, and in this busy city, anti-stress treatments are sure to satisfy. I was put at ease immediately as I was greeted by a friendly receptionist. She walked me up to the women’s locker room and introduced me to the amenities. I was provided with an extra-large fluffy robe and shower shoes, as well as tea, fruit, and water; I felt well on my way to relaxation already. Soon I was retrieved by Karen, who was very nice and explained all the benefits of Emerge’s Hydrotherapy treatment. Emerge strongly upholds the philosophy of the European Kur, which is a series of treatments – usually 3 taken consecutively – that aim to replenish the body with minerals and nutrients as well as relax the mind, Karen explained. The treatments use natural resources such as thermal mineral water, purifying algae, mud, and essential oils and minerals. A Hydrotherapy session is one of the most beneficial parts of every Kur treatment series, because it prepares the body to receive the other treatments and therefore makes them more effective. The "Hydrostorm"
Emerge’s Hydrostorm is an incredible water experience and an excellent way to start a spa session. It looks like a large extravagant shower stall. So why would someone pay spa prices for something they do every day? Well just like a hot shower can wash all your worries away at the end of a stressful day, the Hydrostorm does exactly that to the ultimate degree. Combining steam, showers, waterfall, aromatherapy, color therapy and oxygen, the Hydrostorm allows all the muscles of body to completely relax. The unit has 12 different water nozzles that all provide different amounts of sensations using water pressure and temperature. Multiple showering systems are controlled independently to allow contrast therapy, for example selecting a hot downpour from the overhead drench shower and a cold spray from the body showers. You can also darken the room and lighten the mood by selecting one of the seven fiber-optic colored lights that cycle throughout the session. Before the session, Karen exhaustively showed me how to operate all of the nozzles; but it still took me a few minutes to figure out the best settings once I started the treatment. Once all the jets were operating correctly, the feeling was fabulous. The hydrostorm was the most luxurious shower I have ever taken. But just like most extremely enjoyable feelings, it was over too quickly. Although I was relaxed afterwards, and possibly on the verge of pruniness, the 15 minutes seemed to fly by. After the session, the body and mind are at an optimum state for further treatment such as massage or body wraps, Karen explained. This is a great way to start a day at the spa, not merely as treatment on it’s own. As much of a delicious appetizer as the Hydrostorm is, it will leave you with a craving for more of Emerge’s relaxing treatments. Although, I can’t think of a better way to erase the stress of a bad week than experiencing the Hydrostorm followed by a comforting massage. The Thermal Mineral Baths
Another Hydrotherapy that is equally as effective is one of Emerge’s Thermal Mineral Baths. I would recommend this for someone with sore muscles or increased physical stress, as it not only will relieve tightness and soreness, but it feels incredible. The HydroTub is more beneficial than the Hydrostorm for athletes or those experiencing lots of physical stress because it more intensely loosens tight muscles. The jets of water are more direct, and the entire body is immersed in the tub as minerals or aromatherapy oils are infused into the skin. This therapy is extremely advantageous for someone getting a massage to alleviate soreness and tightness of the muscles, as the massage is more effective once the muscles are loosened. After I experienced the Hydrostorm, I tried the Thermal Mineral Bath. This treatment was just as enjoyable, and I felt that it was more focused on the relaxation of the body than the mind. The treatment was longer and also more physically relaxing than the Hydrostorm alone, so if only receiving one Hydrotherapy treatment, I would recommend the Mineral Bath. After having this treatment, I felt physically at ease but also full of energy. This would be a great treatment to have on a Saturday afternoon before a big night. The effect of both of these luxurious treatments is complete relaxation of the body and mind. A perfect precursor to one of Emerge’s European massages or body treatments, both the Hydrostorm and the Thermal Baths will quickly wash all your cares away.
