Luxury Shopping at Mohegan Sun

It would be quite a stretch to say that Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut is a luxury shopping destination. However, if you are already there rolling the dice, there are a number of boutiques which will require your American Express Centurion card.

With over 130 thousand square feet of retail and restaurant space, Mohegan Sun has a respectable layout. Located between the Casinos of the Earth and Sky, there are a handful of high end haunts. During my recent visit one could not ignore the bustle of the newly-opened (July 12, 2006) Coach boutique. Brightly lit with a clean design, Coach offers a range of smaller pieces including key chains, scarves, and sunglasses. And of course for those who want to indulge, bags are abundant. New for the fall is the Chelsea collection, featuring bags of many sizes in luxurious matte lavender leather with brown leather detailing ($198.00 to $498.00).  But the pick of the store had to be the Coach Hamptons Weekend scarf print quilted jacket with a faux fur collar ($698.00). The interesting geometric circle design in periwinkle and brown is both a practical and flirty addition to the early fall wardrobe.

But if purses are your pleasure, Boccelli is a must-see. With over one hundred stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, Boccelli satisfies the high end palate. Stocking names such as Tods, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Ferragamo, Dior, and Chloe, there is truly something delicious for every taste. The Fendi Spy Bag is oversized and makes a statement. In hues of deep blue and mahogany, it is the object d’art in the store, and at $5,000.00, it is the most expensive as well.

A crystal "aquarium": a view below the sea
in signature Swarovski crystal

As one makes their way down the expansive mall, one can’t help but be drawn in by the dazzle and distinction of Swarovski. Although they’re known mostly for their crystal figurines, recently people know of Swarovski as the maker of the crystal star atop the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree each year. The Austrian crystal displays are fascinating and fun. From delightful trinkets to high end statement pieces, the store is loaded with options. Nestled in with the figurines is a small but interesting collection of Daniel Swarovski sunglasses ($500.00). Although they are adorned with a generous smattering of sparkles, they do not feel gauche. Instead they are fashionably fabulous and perfect for one looking to accessorize their “casino-look” and still be able to wear them after the party is over! But again, the true art of Swarovski is the whimsical and mesmerizing figurines. Their signature swan comes in all sizes and price tags. The “Maxi Swan” ($5,000.00) is 6 ½ x 6 ¼ and is hand crafted to perfection and would be a lovely addition to a collection or the ultimate starter piece.

For those really looking to cash in their jackpot winnings, there is no place like Lux, Bond and Green. The sheer enormity of their Rolex display is reason to enter by itself! With dozens of the classic timepieces in the front case, it is hard to pick a favorite. Mine was the women’s diamond encrusted white 18k gold, day and date Presidential ($48,000.00). Of course there is a “his” version as well with the same sparkling splendor ($92,000.00). In addition to mammoth Rolex display and timepieces, you’ll find chronometers from Bvlgari, Chopard, and Piaget. And if you really want to fill the role of the high roller, take a walk to the back.  Sitting proudly in its tightly guarded case is a bold yet elegant 31 carat graduated diamond line necklace. It is grand and demure all at once and is priced as such at $140,000.00.

Does Mohegan Sun’s shopping options compare to those of a Vegas casino? No, and they don’t try to. Vegas is Vegas; enough said. Mohegan blends a nice mix of medium priced shops peppered with some high end options. They know their clientele very well and it shows. I would like to see however a Jimmy Choo or a Manolo in there someday, who could resist tapping around the casino floor with those aces strapped around your ankles! Now that’s feeling lucky!
