You may be asking “What is a ‘Rolling First Look’?”, and “Why is he doing it for this piece of tech?”.

Only announced two weeks ago, Canon’s Powershot G10 – the company’s so-called “flagship” to its top-of-the-line Powershot G-series compact digital cameras – has created quite a buzz in the photo world. Many pro photographers and serious hobbyists have been anxious to get their hands on the G10 since its unveiling. An equal number of pros and hobbyists have been highly critical of the new G10.

All before anyone has seen actual pictures taken from the G10.

At the same time, recent history for consumers who want to buy a high-end Canon camera has shown one thing: if you don’t buy one when you have the chance, you may end up waiting several months before the model is back in stock. The Canon Powershot G9, the G10’s predecessor, had heavy preorders when it was released in December 2007. So much so that people whose preorders weren’t filled when retailers got their first shipment had to wait a long time before they could find a G9. Many well-respected, high-end camera retailers in Boston told me that they had to wait several months before they received a second shipment of the G9. That second shipment was actually the “completion” of the initial order that the stores placed. Prospects for the new G10 don’t look any better. Well-respected NYC camera retailer B&H Photo stopped accepting preorders for the G10 just a week after it was unveiled. And an established pro camera store in Boston said that they placed an initial order of 24 Powershot G10s; Canon expects to fulfill the retailer’s order with just two units when the G10 gets released.

I had planned a “standard” review of Canon’s new Powershot G10. But with all the “uncertainty” about the camera’s performance – even people forming opinions on picture quality without ever seeing a real G10 picture – I decided to approach this review differently.

I was fortunate to receive an early package of the Powershot G10 (actually, I received only today!). And because of the high level of interest in Canon’s new pocket “flagship” – as well as the expected scarcity of the G10 once it ships to retailers – I decided not to spend the normal days or weeks before publishing a full review. Instead I’ll be providing a “Rolling First Look”: providing information, photo samples, and opinions on the Powershot G10 as quickly as I can.

As new review content for the Powershot G10 is completed, I will post it here.
