Why digital photography? There's one simple reason — independent of your technological acumen — that we can all relate to: you'll save money (and time).

Advances in the technology have come such that, with a modest digital camera and photo printer, the photos you print yourself are just as good as the "one-hour" processing shops. If you remember that it costs around $25 to buy, develop, and print one roll of film, that means the total cost of 40 rolls will be $1,000. Not to mention the time to drop off and pick up your photo order. Enlargements and duplicates costs more than that, and normally take longer than that.

The following items are those which I personally use. I admit that my "technological needs" may vary from yours ... but the output quality is virtually indistinguishable from even professional photo labs. If you bought both of them, the total cost would be the equivalent of 40 rolls of film. But I feel this equipment will last you many times longer than the first 40 rolls.

Canon PowerShot G5 Digital Camera
Canon USA

The level of tech capability of digital cameras has reached a point where printed digital photos are identical to prints from traditional film. A 3-megapizel camera can produce pro-quality 8x10 prints ... at 5-megapizels, you can print great photos as large as 13"x19".

This Canon PowerShot G5 proves that "cute" can also be "powerful"! In addition to shooting at 5-megapizels, the G5 also comes standard with a rechargeable lithium ion battery (no more alkalines to buy!).Plus it has a "moving" auto-focus sensor, which "predicts" the subject in the viewfinder and focusing directly on that subject ... without even moving the camera!

IF you decide to get the Powershot G5, I also highly recommend getting an external flash. With an external flash, you won't believe how great your photos will come out. Pictures of your family and friends will have a nice, natural lighting, rather than the harsh bright images that are normal with built-in flash.

This  Canon 420EX Speedlite is fully compatible with all of the G5's advanced auto-exposure features, plus you can use it with Canon's other cameras, both film and digital.

Need a printer to crank out those 13x19 5-megapizel photos? You cannot buy a better photo printer under $700 than the Epson Stylus Photo 2200 printer.
